With those words NFL commissioner Roger Goodell announced the selection of Stanford quarterback Andrew Luck by the Indianapolis Colts as the first pick in the 2012 National Football League draft. Luck who passed up the 2011 NFL draft to play his redshirt junior year at Stanford was once again the runner-up for the Heisman Trophy for the 2011 college football season. When the Colts released 4 time NFL MVP Peyton Manning on March 7th, 2012 it became pretty much a done deal that they would select Andrew Luck with their first selection in the draft. After meeting with several teams, Peyton Manning signed a 5 year $96 million deal with the Denver Broncos on March 20th.

Andrew Luck celebrates a touchdown in the 113th Big Game against Cal on November 20th, 2011 at Memorial Stadium in Berkeley, CA.

With the 4th overall pick in the 2012 NFL draft the Minnesota Vikings select USC offensive tackle Matt Kalil. Matt Kalil was a 2011 All American 1st team member who also won the Pac-12′s Morris Trophy. Having played only his junior year, Kalil becomes the 76th player from USC to be drafted in the first round of the NFL draft.

With the 70th overall pick in the 3rd round of the 2012 NFL draft the Jacksonville Jaguars selected University of California at Berkeley ( Cal ) punter Byran Anger. Few punters are selected this high in the draft, but Jacksonville needed to replace their former punter Adam Podlesh who as a free agent went to the Chicago Bears. Jacksonville is hoping that Bryan Anger can put up the same type of numbers he did during his college career where he averaged 43.5 yards a punt, and put 90 punts inside the opposing teams 20 yard line. Anger is shown here punting against the USC Trojans in a 2011 regular season game at ATT park in San Francisco that served as the Bears home field while their permanent home field Memorial Stadium in Berkeley is rebuilt and will be ready for the 2012 college football season.

On August 24th, 2010 the San Francisco Giants assembled for their annual team picture in AT&T park. The Giants started the day trailing the San Diego Padres by 5 1/2 games in the National League Western division with a 70-56 record. After victories on that Tuesday by both the Giants and the Padres, the Giants were still trailing by 5 1/2 games. I don’t know if anybody on the sunny day that the Giants took their team picture knew of, or even dreamed what would happen next.

On Thursday of that week, the Padres would start a 10 game losing steak that would bring the Giants to within one game of the division leading Padres. By the end of the season the Giants were leading the division and needed to win only one game of a three game home stand against the Padres to win the NL West. After losing the first two games of the series, the Giants defeated the Padres 3-0 on Sunday October 3rd to win the National Western Division with a 92 win and 70 loss record.

Now two months and 1 day after their team photo and playoff victories over both the Atlanta Braves and the favored Philadelphia Phillies the Giants are in the World Series and will host the Texas Rangers on Wednesday October 27th with a 7:30 PM start time. Who could have guessed how things would have turned out that day in August at AT&T park. I guess sometimes things just work out if you “Don’t Stop Believing”.

Giants manager Bruce Bochy is the center of focus in this photo taken before the official team picture.

November 2, 2010 Update: It turns out if you believe, AND have the best 4 pitcher starting rotation in Major League Baseball ( Tim Lincecum, Matt Cain, Jonathan Sanchez, Madison Bumgarner ) and have the best closer in baseball ( Brian Wilson ), and sprinkle that with timely hitting you can become Baseball’s World Series World Champions for the 2010 season by defeating the Texas Rangers of the American League 4 games to one.

October 2012 Update – View all the work required to take a photo that lasts just 1/250 in this 60 second time lapse video from the 2011 SF Giants Picture Day.

Last month I had the opportunity to assist Berkeley Photographer Stephen Hew as a 2nd photographer during a San Francisco wedding at St. Ignatius Catholic Church and the reception that followed at the Delancey Street Foundation in the Herbert Halper Town Hall. You can view Stephen’s photos of the wedding day HERE. After meeting up with Stephen at the San Francisco Courtyard Marriott where the bride was getting ready, my coverage started with a quick trip to St Ignatius church to photograph to guys. The ceremony took place inside the beautiful and awe inspiring St Ignatius church. After the ceremony is was time for a ride on a motorized cable car to visit a few spots around town, including a stop at AT&T Park home of the San Francisco Giants. After our last stop on the city tour is was time to head to the Delancey Street Foundation’s Herbert Halper Town Hall for the reception.

View from the balcony of wedding ceremony and the elegance of the church.
