I “released” my photoshop radial blur CPU benchmark test almost a year ago. Since then CPU processors have gotten faster, as they always do. So it was time update the test in preparation for the new even faster Intel six core hyper threaded Gulftown processor, the Core i7 980X. The only basic difference between this new and improved CPU benchmark test and the older test is the larger file that the test is performed on. New for this test is a photoshop action that will preform the test for you. Also the newer version of test allows you to use Photoshop CS3, CS4, CS5,  CS6, and Photoshop CC to time the result for you.
December 2021 UPDATE: Even though this post is from 2010, I still get results & add them to the list. Keep posting those times.

Step One – down load the Radial Blur Test Action. Load action into photoshop. The test automates this routine – ( Filter > Blur > Radial Blur.Set the Radial Blur setting to: Amount at 100, Blur Method to Spin, and finally Quality to Best )

Step Two – down load the file ( about 4.8 MB ) to run the test on by clicking on the image below. Next open the image in CS3, CS4, CS5, CS6, or CC ( Creative Cloud ).

Step Three – close any and all unnecessary programs including the browser you used to read this photo blog post and down load the files from.

Step Four – note the time in the box below the image. If the time is not showing, use the black arrow shown in the bottom image to change the display mode under the image.

Step Five – note the time displayed under the image. The amount of time already listed under the picture will need to be subtracted to from the the test score time.

Step Six – Run the test by opening the action and running the “PS Radial Blur Test”. The test took 20.0 seconds on my current computer which is a HP h8-1070t ($1200 -Oct. 2011) PC powered by an Intel i7-2600 3.40 GHz CPU running Win 7 64 bit on CS5.

Step Seven – if you have gotten this far and have a test time, please feel free to post a comment with your time. Don’t forget to include the photoshop version along with the CPU specs. The tests results are not effected by RAM size, so there is no need to list how much RAM your computer has.

Great news, one of the many 1000’s of people who read my blog weekly, ( ok, hundreds of people who read my blog ) preformed the radial blur test on his computer at several different over clocking speeds. This is a great way to get an apples to apples comparison for CPU test results. Without any further delay, I present the test times, computer setup, and over clocking speeds from Steve Lingeman of Burke, Virginia.

Steve’s computer with prices as purchased from newegg.com

The total build cost for the system (not including Win 7) was $2853.79 plus $35 shipping.

LIAN LI ARMORSUIT PC-P50 Black Aluminum ATX Mid Tower Computer Case – $149.99

CORSAIR DOMINATOR 12GB (6 x 2GB) 240-Pin DDR3 SDRAM DDR3 1600 – $439.99
WD RE3 WD1002FBYS 1TB 7200 RPM SATA 3.0Gb/s 3.5″ – 2 @ $159.99 ea – $319.98
COOLER MASTER Intel Core i7 compatible Hyper N 520 RR-920-N520-GP 92mm Sleeve CPU Cooler – $33.88
LG Black 10X Blu-ray Burner SATA Model WH10LS30 – $139.99
ASUS P6X58D Premium LGA 1366 Intel X58 SATA 6Gb/s USB 3.0 ATX Intel MB – $294.99
Intel Core i7-980X Extreme Edition Gulftown 3.33GHz – $1,049.99
Antec TruePower New TP-750 Blue 750W P/S – $119.99
DIAMOND 5850PE51G Radeon HD 5850 – $304.99

After the build Steve had some thoughts about the video card. “Also, instead of the Diamond/ATI videocard, I think I’d go with an Nvidia GTX480 (or eventually the GTX485) for about the same price. Selecting the ATI was poor planning. I was not thinking about the acceleration provided by Nvidia’s Cuda GPU. It’s not a big deal for PS5 but it makes a huge difference editing video with Premiere Pro CS5.”

Here are the results from Steve’s custom computer build.

February 2011 update: To quote Eddie Murphy from the movie 48 Hours, “there’s a new sheriff in town” & his name is Mac Pro with 12 cores.

A reader has sent in a new chart topping time of 9.3 seconds using the photoshop benchmark test on his brand spanking new 12 core Mac Pro. Here are the details of the machine – Mac Pro running OS X 10.6 – Dual 6 core Intel 2.93 GHz Xeon Westmere CPU – 8 GB of RAM – ATI Radeon HD 5770 1GB – Tested using Photoshop CS5 64 bit – Priced at $6349 – Here’s the interesting note, the reader purchased his brand new top of the line chart busting desktop computer for video editing. He said of the new computer “nice to have a top score machine at least once”.

September 2012 Update – A PC now tops the time chart with a smoking fast 8.3 second time. Most interesting is that it’s a home built computer that cost just $2115.

January 2015 Update – A 24 core PC now tops the chart with a time of 6.3 seconds. Techguy’s new PC computer  that was custom built by  xicomputer.com runs two 12 core Intel Xeon E5-2695 2.4 GHz processors on the Windows 8.1 Pro operating system.

October 2016 Update – A 28 core PC now tops the chart with a time of 3.8 seconds. Techguy’s new PC computer that was custom built runs two 14 core Intel Xeon E5-2690 V4 2.6 GHz processors on the Windows 10 Pro operating system.

March 2021 Update – A single core PowerPC G3 400 MHz from 1999 sits at the bottom of the chart with a time of 2147.3 seconds. The Apple Power Macintosh G3 (Blue & White) runs on the Mac OS X 9.2.2 operating system and ran the speed test on Photoshop 7.01.

I am running an Intel Core i7 11700k at stock speed (only turbo boosting) 48gb ddr4 2400 ram, Photoshop CS 5.1 trial, Windows 11 Pro, Nvidia GTX 1080 Dell OEM edition and this system scored 4.1 seconds!

I have Intel Core i7 5960x overclocked to 4ghz all cores, 64gb RAM, Windows Server 2019, Gigabyte GA-X99-UD4P on BIOS f23c, Adobe Photoshop CS 5 Trial (tempted to try it in CC 2021) 7.8 seconds

Not bad for a system that Micro$oft feels is too antiquated to run their latest OS.

    Miika,
Did you remember to subtract the time it took to load the photo. I’ve seen that take up to .5 seconds.
That would improve your time. The other possible answer is, that the test is being run on many different
computers, and while the test times with the same CPU’s are pretty close, and in some cases exactly the same,
there are too many other slight variables that can effect the results.

Quick update, ran the test again but this time I entered the ASUS ez bios and selected to run at “Optimal” condition. I have no clue how to overclock so I tried that and got it to run 16.0 seconds. Hi, I just upgraded my PC setup and ran the improved test on both my new and my old setup.

My new setup with AMD Phenom II x4 965 on a Gigabyte 790XTA-UD4 in Windows 7 Ultimate 64-bit with Adobe Photoshop CS4 64-bit resulted in 42,6 seconds.

On the other hand, my old setup with AMD Athlon 64 3700+ (single core) on an Asus A8N32-SLI-Deluxe in Windows XP Professional 32-bit with Adobe Photoshop CS3 32-bit resulted in 283.2 seconds.

I am going to assume that my money was well spent, as I was aiming for faster photoshop and lightroom delays 🙂

    Thanks for the great test!
